among the Californians who’ve grown concerned about their neighbors’ synthetic lawns

Dianne Woelke, a retired nurse in San Diego, is among the Californians who’ve grown concerned about their neighbors’ synthetic lawns. She joined a group called Safe Healthy Playing Fields to advocate against their use. “It’s staggering the depth of minutia involved in this product. It’s just a lot of plastic with a lot of chemicals leaching from it,” Woelke said. One of the bills Newsom signed, for instance, undoes the Brown-era law and allows cities and counties to again ban artificial turf. Some California cities have already begun moving to prohibit fake lawns, including Millbrae in San Mateo County and San Marino in Los Angeles County. “Emerging research is making it clear that artificial turf poses an environmental threat due to its lack of recyclability and presence of toxins such as lead and PFAS,” said state Sen. Ben Allen, the Redondo Beach Democrat who authored the bill. With the new law “local governments will again be able to regulate artificial turf in a way to both p...

The front yard always looks good year-round

Mark Reiser, who is a Southern California regional manager with Tough Turtle Turf, told NBC 7 that synthetic turf continues to be in high demand. "The front yard always looks good year-round — you don’t have to worry about it,” Reiser said. "Turf has just become so much more functional when it comes to no more dirt, no more mud, no more paying anyone to mow it or take care of it." Reiser is aware of the new legislation signed by Newsom but does not feel it is reasonable or will make an impact on homeowners. “Banning turf, with how popular it is with homeowners, how it’s making their lifestyle a little easier — there’s no way that a city is going to take that stand,” Reiser said. Reiser said that, when it comes to concerns about what synthetic turf is made of, it depends on what company you purchase from and what material they use. He also mentioned that the turf and installation process for school playing fields is much different than that used for homes. “You got to be...

law allowing local governments to ban artificial turf

In the past several years, homeowners in California have opted to exchange natural grass for synthetic turf, which has been seen as a year-round drought-resistant green grass option of which many neighbors would be envious. However, Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed legislation that permits local governments, including cities and counties, to ban synthetic grass in neighborhoods due to potential health concerns. “There are no short number of microplastics that come with these products,” said Dianne Woelke, a retired nurse who is part of Safe Healthy Playing Fields. “They continue to degrade. They continue to leach out all of these PFAs and other chemicals.”  Woelke has spent years collecting information related to the health concerns that come from synthetic turf. She said not only are there PFAs (also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and microplastics, but the fake grass can create a heat island effect and blades can hold onto bacteria, especially on large-scale...

10 Landscape Focal Points

The adaptability of artificial grass means it can enhance a wide range of focal points in various ways. It enhances the visual appeal of these features while improving your yard’s functionality and safety. Let’s explore the various landscape focal points that synthetic grass can level up. 1. Water Features Whether it's a fountain, a pool, a koi pond, or a cascading waterfall, water features make excellent focal points. They evoke a sense of tranquility and balance.  Artificial grass surrounding a water feature provides an eye-catching contrast between the vibrant green and the reflective surface of the water. Plus, it maintains its aesthetic appeal throughout the year, unaffected by muddy patches or discoloration that natural grass might experience. 2. Statues and Sculptures These artistic elements serve as dramatic centerpieces in a garden.  An artificial grass installation in San Jose can enhance the visibility of these features by offering a consistent, clean, and low...

Why Disinfect Poolside Artificial Grass?

It is crucial to properly disinfect poolside artificial turf regularly for health and safety reasons. After all, the area surrounding a swimming pool sees a high volume of human and potentially animal traffic throughout the day.  Young children also frequently play barefoot on the grass, making them more susceptible to touching pathogens. Meanwhile, the chlorinated water could serve as a breeding ground for microbes like bacteria and viruses.  While the best artificial turf in San Jose resists absorbing these organisms better than porous surfaces, disinfection eliminates any risk of contamination. A quick spray of disinfectant pairs the convenience of synthetic grass with the peace of mind that comes from a sanitized recreational area.

How to Disinfect Poolside Artificial Turf

Sanitizing your artificial grass pool surrounds is as easy as following these four steps.  1. Choose Your Disinfectant Diluted bleach solutions are some people’s go-to disinfectant for synthetic turf installations. However, you can also use alternatives like vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and commercial disinfectants.  2. Apply a Liberal Coating Thoroughly spray the disinfectant all over the artificial turf from a standing position until fully coated but not puddled or pooled. Be cautious around any surrounding plants. 3. Let Sit Briefly Leave the disinfecting solution on the grass for no less than 10 minutes to sanitize properly. It will interact with any microbes on contact. 4. Flush with Water Once the recommended time has elapsed, flush away all bleach residues by thoroughly rinsing the entire lawn surface with copious fresh water from the hose. Proper rinsing protects beneficial bacteria and avoids irritation.

Pet-Friendly Space

If you’re a dog or cat owner, you know just how important it is for pets to run wild every once in a while. Unfortunately, those tiny, adorable paws can also cause quite the damage to any backyard or garden with natural grass. Nobody likes discolored grass due to animal waste or dug up holes everywhere. This is where the sturdy artificial grass comes in very handy. When used as a surface for a dog run or carpeting for an outdoor pet shelter, synthetic turf offers a paw-friendly surface and allows owners to easily tidy up after their pets. All you need is a hose and some water to wash everything down and through its excellent drainage system. There’s also no risk of your pet tracking mud or debris into the house once cleanup is done.

Outdoor Play Area

If you have kids living in your house, you can turn your backyard into a great play area with synthetic grass. Artificial turf is highly durable, able to hold up well against a lot of foot traffic and rough play. Parents don’t have to dread playtime anymore for fear of patchy grass and unsightly holes on the lawn. Artificial grass is also safer since it helps break the fall and softens the landing in case anyone takes a tumble. But if you really want to make your backyard a kid’s paradise in hopes of luring your children away from their gadgets, use artificial grass to make a mini golf course, a large chess board, a small soccer field or even your own playground.

Quirky Art Installations

Got any budding artists in the family? Here’s a fun idea: use artificial grass as a material for your next big art project! Synthetic turf is actually quite versatile and easily workable. It can be cut into any shape to create beautiful patterns and bold designs, if one is so inclined. Use it as a cover for an accent wall, covering for outdoor furniture, combine it with other materials to come up with non-linear, contemporary designs for any location in your home. The key is not to limit yourself. Who knows? This little creative task may end up becoming an enjoyable family activity. If you lack the skill for such applications, you can run your ideas by a professional installer. They can help make your vision come to life.
